In development since 2022 and launched in 2025, NERO is designed to treat blockspace as a configurable, demand-based commodity. Unlike protocol-controlled-fee models, NERO allows applications to set their own gas fee parameters - including fee currency, subsidy logic, and pricing method - while remaining fully EVM-compatible. This approach supports real price discovery, enabling dApps to assign value to blockspace based on user intent, urgency, and transaction type.
The protocol introduces a multidimensional fee system referred to as Blockspace 2.0. This framework decouples blockspace pricing from protocol-level governance, allowing developers to participate directly in setting how, in what, and by whom fees are paid. Blockspace on NERO is programmable by the application layer, including support for future mechanisms such as order flow auctions and dynamic priority bidding.
One of NERO’s core features is a Paymaster architecture, which lets developers configure how fees are handled at the transaction level. Applications can allow users to pay in stablecoins, altcoins, or app-specific tokens - removing the requirement for the native token at the point of use. dApps may also choose to subsidize fees entirely on behalf of their users (gas-optional UX), but this is framed as a customer acquisition cost (CAC) strategy, not a permanent condition. In all cases, final settlement and validator compensation are still denominated in the $NERO token.
This model shifts value accrual from the protocol level to the application layer. Historically, dApps have driven user growth while protocols captured most of the economic upside via fixed take-rates. On NERO, dApps can monetize their own activity, align incentives with their token economy, and avoid the complexity of launching their own appchains or rollups.
In NERO’s final form, each application will be able to control its own encrypted mempool, eliminating third-party MEV and reclaiming order flow. This gives businesses direct control over transaction ordering and monetization—placing execution logic and value capture entirely in the hands of the entity bringing users on-chain. In time, NERO will extend this programmable blockspace infrastructure to other EVM chains, enabling dApps to control their full transaction supply chain - no matter where they deploy.
NERO’s architecture includes native Account Abstraction (ERC-4337 compatible), enabling programmable wallets, social login flows, and session-based signatures. This design allows applications to deliver Web2-like experiences without compromising on-chain verification or decentralization. Developers retain full control over fee structure, transaction UX, and token utility - without needing to leave the Ethereum tooling environment.
NERO uses a pipelined BFT consensus mechanism and supports modular design patterns for execution and settlement layers. It is fully compatible with Solidity and major Web3 development tools. Infrastructure partners and validators include both community node operators and regulated entities from Japan and other global markets.
The native token, $NERO, is used for staking, validator rewards, and settlement of application-layer fees. Applications acquire and stake $NERO in order to configure Paymasters, access network services, and sustain their fee-sharing configurations. Rewards for validators are delivered through a hybrid of fixed block incentives and usage-based distributions.
As of mid-2025, NERO has seen over 120 dApps deployments in preparation for athe TGE. The project is based in Tokyo and maintains developer relations and ecosystem operations across North America, Brazil, and Asia. Key early verticals include SocialFi, GameFi, and real-world tokenization, with integrations from consumer brands and entertainment platforms currently in development.
